Volume 16 (2024)

The sixteenth volume of Current Research in Jazz features a range of articles considering major jazz figures in broad strokes and in minute detail.

Duke Ellington was an extremely prolific composer with a long career, but estimates vary widely as to just how much music he wrote. A logical and systematic plan is proposed to approach the solving of this puzzle.

As part of a continuing series of chronology research on trumpeter-bandleader Maynard Ferguson, the period just after his departure from the Stan Kenton Orchestra is examined. The focus is on Ferguson’s contributions as a Hollywood studio orchestra musician.

As an added attraction, the soundtracks of two films from this period are analyzed. Longstanding misinformation is corrected.

The loss of Dan Morgenstern has been deeply felt among those who knew him. This memorial scrapbook is our way to honor him.
